While typical DIY enthusiasts rely on standard drill bit sets for creating small openings in materials like steel, wood, and plastic, there exists a variety of specialized drill bits that cater to more intricate applications. Although most of these specialized bits do create boreholes, they serve functions beyond merely inserting screws into wood and other substances. They are designed to create larger openings needed for various projects—such as fitting plugs or creating angled holes to join materials at right angles.
Stepped Drill Bit
A strong method for joining two pieces of wood is pocket hole joinery. This process involves drilling at an angle to create a “pocket” for screws, facilitating a mechanical connection that remains unobtrusive or can be covered with plugs.
Using a pocket hole jig is essential to ensure accuracy during drilling, especially with movable materials. A stepped drill bit is ideal for this task because its smaller tip drills a pilot hole for the screw, while the larger diameter removes more material, producing a concealed “pocket” for the screwhead. This feature makes it an indispensable addition to any beginner’s woodworking toolkit.
While you could use regular drill bits to create pocket holes, the process would be more complex and larger in scope, requiring two separate bits—which increases the chances of misalignment and errors.
Forstner Bit
Standard drill bits may be effective for small holes when installing screws, but they fall short when larger openings are required—for instance, when crafting cabinet doors or installing desk grommets. In such cases, opting for a Forstner bit is preferable, particularly for creating flat-bottomed holes for hinges and dowel joints or for achieving precise cuts in high-value hardwood.
While spade bits can also bore large holes, they produce rough cuts that aren’t suitable for applications demanding a fine finish. Likewise, hole saws can yield sizeable openings but are limited in that they cannot create flat bottoms. The Forstner bit provides an excellent solution that complements a range of woodworking tasks.
Coring Drill Bit
When it comes to cutting sizeable openings in materials such as brick or concrete, a coring drill bit is the tool of choice. Recognizable by its hollow design and sharp cutting edges, this bit can only reach a certain depth before the core material needs removal from within it for continued drilling.
Coring drill bits generally fall into two categories: carbide and diamond. Carbide bits, featuring tungsten carbide teeth, are a more affordable alternative but may struggle with tougher materials like steel rebar and typically yield less clean results. Conversely, diamond coring drill bits can cut through rebar efficiently but require a cooling process, whether through pauses during operation or water-cooling systems.
Annular Cutter Drill Bit
When drilling large-diameter holes through metals, standard bits made for wood or masonry won’t suffice. An annular cutter drill bit is necessary for such jobs. Differentiated by its cylindrical design, it delivers clean, precise cuts, providing smooth edges that eliminate the need for secondary deburring or reaming, thus saving time and preventing damage to wires and cables.
Similar to coring drill bits, annular cutters come in two variants: high-speed steel (HSS) and tungsten carbide-tipped (TCT). HSS is the budget-friendly option, suitable for softer metals such as copper and aluminum, whereas TCT bits are better for tougher materials like cast iron and hardened steel, though they come at a higher cost and cannot be sharpened for reuse.
Plug Cutter Drill Bit
Unlike other drill bits that create holes, the plug cutter drill bit is designed to cut wooden plugs used to cover counterbored holes, effectively hiding screws or bolts that connect wooden pieces.
Using a jig or drill press is necessary when working with a plug cutter bit since relying on a pilot hole can inadvertently create openings in the plug itself. After extracting the plug, use wood glue to secure it in place, matching the grain with the surrounding wood before gently tapping it in. Although wood filler is an option, a plug cutter allows for a more natural appearance, especially important if the project will be stained, enabling you to match the plugs with the original wood nicely or choose contrasting wood for a decorative effect.
