The U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford, the flagship of its class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, is currently docked for maintenance while on a lengthy deployment in the Middle East. According to the United States Naval Institute, Souda Bay, Greece, will serve as the ship’s temporary station for several weeks.

This mission has seen its share of challenges, including a significant fire in the laundry compartment which resulted in smoke inhalation injuries to over 200 personnel. The ongoing tensions with Iran have necessitated repairs, making this port call essential.

However, the carrier remains operational. U.S. Fleet Forces Command confirmed that: “The aircraft carrier is fully mission capable,” emphasizing that “the port call facilitates timely assessments, repairs, and resupply efforts. The Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group is actively continuing its overseas deployment.”

The Largest and Most Advanced Carrier

The Gerald R. Ford spans 1,106 feet and boasts a displacement of 100,000 tons, making it the largest warship ever constructed. As the first of its class, it symbolizes the pinnacle of aircraft carrier innovation and is slated to replace the aging Nimitz-class carriers.

Currently, only one Gerald R. Ford-class carrier is in active service. Designed for a 50-year operational lifespan, it utilizes two nuclear reactors that allow it to operate without the need for frequent refueling, providing it with virtually limitless range on the seas.
