If you inquire with most truck drivers about the essential features of a good semi-truck, you might hear responses focused on comfortable seating, a dependable power source, and ample storage. However, ensuring that all tires are intact would seem like an obvious requirement; yet, a truck driver in Canada seemed to neglect this crucial detail. The Ontario Provincial Police recently took to social media to advise drivers to inspect their tires before embarking on journeys after stopping a truck on Highway 17. Reports reveal that the vehicle traveled over 60 miles without one of its tires.
The driver now faces several charges related to unsafe vehicle operation. As reported by CTV News, the 41-year-old driver, who remains unnamed, hails from Calgary, while the tractor and trailer were registered to a company based in Steinbach. The company also is facing legal repercussions due to the vehicle’s hazardous condition. Following the incident, police removed the truck from the roadway, requiring repairs before it could be cleared for operation again.
U.S. Truckers Have Different Tire Regulations
Regulations for the road can differ significantly between Canada and the United States, and there are numerous driving practices that may be acceptable in one country but not in the other. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states that U.S. truck drivers are permitted to remove a single defective tire from a set of dual tires, provided that the weight on the remaining tires does not surpass the legal limits.
This allowance, however, is conditional on having four tires per axle to start with. Images shared by the Ontario Provincial Police indicate that the truck they apprehended had not been fitted with dual tires, resulting in just one rim making contact with the road. Thus, it was bound to draw the attention of law enforcement regardless of the border.
Even truckers who diligently monitor the state of their tires will eventually need replacements, and changing a tire on a semi can be more challenging than one might expect. Attempting to change such tires without proper expertise could lead to injury, making it a task best suited for professionals.
