The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle stands as one of the most celebrated and effective American fighter jets. Its journey began in the late 1960s, with operational service commencing in the early 1970s. Now, over five decades later, the F-15 continues to play a vital role not only for the United States Air Force but also for numerous other military forces worldwide.

Throughout its extensive service, the F-15 has achieved over 100 air-to-air victories without ever being defeated in direct aerial combat. This impressive track record comes under scrutiny, however, due to a recent incident involving a friendly-fire event. Reports indicate that during the tumultuous kickoff of Operation Epic Fury against Iran, three American F-15E Strike Eagles were mistakenly shot down by a Kuwaiti F/A-18 Hornet.

Fortunately, the incident, currently under investigation, resulted in no fatalities or severe injuries, with the pilots successfully ejecting from their aircraft. This event marks a notable and unusual case of friendly fire within the U.S. Air Force in recent history, prompting thorough examination to understand precisely what occurred.

Hornet downs Eagles

Historically, losses of American military aircraft often stem from accidents or mechanical failures, such as Navy jets toppled from aircraft carriers. Sometimes these incidents also involve friendly fire, which, although infrequent, can occur. In late 2024, for instance, a friendly missile cruiser shot down a U.S. Navy Super Hornet by mistake.

The notion that “one F/A-18 has downed three F-15s” sounds more like a scenario from a combat simulator video game than reality, yet it reflects a true occurrence. Initial amateur footage surfaced showing damaged F-15s tumbling from the sky around Kuwait, followed by clips of the pilots who managed to eject safely. Subsequently, United States Central Command verified that the trio of F-15Es was unintentionally shot down by Kuwaiti defense forces, with all six crew members successfully rescued.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited, but the accidental shoot-downs unfolded amidst high tensions during a wartime context, with Iranian drone strikes being reported in the region. Further investigation may reveal changes in the current understanding of events; however, initial analyses support claims that all three F-15s were mistakenly targeted by air-to-air fire from a solitary F/A-18.

Chaos and confusion over Kuwait

Analysis of the released video footage indicates that the damage sustained by the F-15s does not appear consistent with larger surface-to-air weapons, suggesting that they were likely hit by smaller air-to-air missiles. The ability of all three crews to eject points to a possibility of tail hits. Regardless of the exact circumstances, the forthcoming investigation will likely concentrate on identifying the root causes of this friendly fire incident and assessing whether the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems were functioning correctly to differentiate friendly aircraft during the operation.

The downed aircraft were F-15E Strike Eagles, a variant specially designed for ground attack missions. As of March 3, CENTCOM disclosed that more than 200 aircraft, including the F-15 and F/A-18, have participated in Operation Epic Fury, alongside heavy bombers like the B-2 Spirit and B-52 Stratofortress targeting Iranian positions.

While the F-15’s flawless air combat record remains intact despite these accidental shoot-downs, it is noteworthy that a few F-15s have been shot down by enemy forces before, primarily during conflicts in Iraq in the 1990s and 2000s. However, those losses were primarily due to ground-based weaponry rather than engagements with other aircraft.
