Nuclear aircraft carriers predominantly evoke thoughts of the extensive fleet of the U.S. Navy, accompanied only by one other nation capable of operating such vessels, France. This country possesses the formidable Charles De Gaulle, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier serving as a floating air base.

Throughout its history, this French aircraft carrier has been involved in various military operations in the Middle East, and it is now being redeployed to the Mediterranean to safeguard French allies amid ongoing operations led by the United States and Israel targeting Iran.

This latest deployment marks a pivotal shift for France, which had previously aimed to avoid direct participation in U.S. and Israeli actions. Following recent Iranian drone attacks on French interests in the area, including military installations and regional partners, President Emmanuel Macron has decided to mobilize the Charles De Gaulle along with other military resources to defend France’s strategic interests.

Capabilities of the Charles De Gaulle

Commissioned in 2001, the Charles de Gaulle marked a significant milestone for the French Navy and the global naval landscape as it became the first non-American nuclear aircraft carrier. Over the years, this esteemed vessel has taken part in numerous military engagements near hotspots in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Expected to remain operational until the late 2030s, it will eventually be succeeded by a new aircraft carrier.

Initially, the Charles de Gaulle was engaged in NATO training missions in the Baltic Sea when tensions escalated in Iran. France had previously held a defensive posture in the region. However, damage from Iranian drone assaults on French military installations and those of its allies—namely a hangar in the UAE and a British airbase in Cyprus—has prompted a change in strategy. Macron has, therefore, ordered the aircraft carrier’s redeployment to the Eastern Mediterranean to bolster defenses along with commitments made through the European Union to protect its allies in the region, including the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait.

Mission Focused on Defense

The Charles de Gaulle can accommodate up to 40 aircraft but is currently outfitted with 20 Dassault Rafale fighters and two E-2C Hawkeye radar planes. These aircraft are poised to protect French and allied forces in the region. The carrier will not be acting alone; it will be accompanied by a strike group including French air defense frigates and destroyers, enhancing its capability against Iranian drone threats.

At present, the U.S. Navy has two carrier strike groups operational in the area as part of Operation Epic Fury against Iran. Despite France’s ongoing call for diplomatic resolutions, President Macron has demonstrated a resolute stance in reinforcing France’s defense strategy alongside its allies.

Furthermore, additional French military resources are being deployed to the region, including air defense systems and more Rafale fighters to enhance protection for French forces stationed in the United Arab Emirates.
