Sony has officially announced an increase in prices across its entire PS5 console range. This marks the second price adjustment in under a year, following a $50 increase in August 2025 amid President Trump’s tariff conflicts. The current adjustment is more pronounced, with many products seeing an increase of $100.
The new standard price for the Sony PS5 now stands at $649, up from $549. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition has risen from $499.99 to $599.99. The PS5 Pro has seen its price increased from $749.99 to a hefty $899.99. Additionally, Sony is raising the cost of the PlayStation Portal remote player by $50, bringing it up from $199.99 to $249.99.
In their blog post regarding the price increase, Sony cited the “ongoing pressures in the global economic landscape” as a contributing factor. They mentioned that soaring RAM prices, largely driven by the growing demand from worldwide AI data centers, might be a factor behind this increase, although this has yet to be confirmed by the company.
Price increases are occurring industry-wide
These substantial price hikes are concerning; however, they reflect a trend seen throughout the gaming industry for some time. Recently, Microsoft raised the prices of its Xbox Series X and Series S, as well as their controllers and games. Moreover, Nintendo also drew attention for increasing the price of the standard Nintendo Switch from $299 to $339 last year.
This shift occurred shortly after President Trump’s imposition of reciprocal tariffs. Additionally, the rise in RAM prices is likely to influence the pricing and release schedules of upcoming consoles from major gaming companies. For instance, Sony may delay the launch of its next-generation console to 2028 or 2029.
The new pricing for Sony’s PS5 models will go into effect starting April 2, 2025, making now a particularly opportune time to purchase one of these consoles if they are available at your local retailer. This pricing adjustment is not confined to the United States; Sony has confirmed that the new prices extend to the UK, Europe, and Japan as well. In the UK, the revised prices are set at £569.99 for the PS5, £519.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition, and £789.99 for the PS5 Pro. Continental Europe will see prices of €649.99 for the PS5, €599.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition, and €899.99 for the PS5 Pro.
