The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid presents a compelling argument for electrification. The company’s compact SUV, known for its all-wheel drive and robust practicality, makes strides in areas traditionally sidelined like efficiency and driving enjoyment, thanks to its hybrid system.

In terms of pricing, the standard Crosstrek begins at $28,415 (including a $1,420 destination fee), while the entry-level Crosstrek Sport Hybrid starts at $35,415. The Limited variant of the hybrid is available from $36,415.

While I may not opt for Citron Yellow ($395), I appreciate Subaru’s bold palette that includes vibrant options like bright red and a striking blue alongside more muted colors. The rugged black cladding adds to its aesthetic appeal, appearing less prominent than that on the Wilderness variant (not currently available as a hybrid), which I find preferable.

Despite being less rugged in specifications, the 8.7-inches of ground clearance outmatches competitors like the CX-50 Hybrid (8.1 inches), RAV4 Hybrid (up to 8.6 inches), and CR-V Hybrid (up to 8.2 inches). The closest rival, Toyota’s Corolla Cross Hybrid, offers just 8 inches of clearance in its all-wheel drive variant.

An Unconventional Hybrid Crossover AWD Solution

Unlike rival hybrid models that delegate power between fuel and electric engines at the front and rear axles, Subaru employs its distinctive mechanically-coupled Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This design, according to Subaru, maintains the same level of traction as its gasoline-only variants while preserving system responsiveness.

The 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine operates on Atkinson and Miller cycles for enhanced fuel efficiency, working in tandem with two electric motors—one to recharge the compact lithium-ion battery and the other to provide additional torque. The combined output is 194 horsepower, exceeding the 180 hp offered by the standard Crosstrek (though torque figures may vary due to the hybrid configuration, the electric motor delivers 199 lb-ft, surpassing the non-hybrid’s 178 lb-ft).

Power is transmitted via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which includes a six-speed “manual” mode, and matches the towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, along with two distinct driving modes primarily affecting accelerator response. Interestingly, despite Subaru marketing the Hybrid with an emphasis on economy, there’s no defined ECO setting available.

Engaging to Drive, Not Just Economical

The Crosstrek Hybrid boasts an official rating of 36 mpg for city, highway, and combined driving, which is seven points more than the standard version and ten points higher than the Wilderness edition.

However, my real-world experience yielded around 29 mpg—an improvement compared to the Wilderness model, but not quite as high as Subaru and EPA projections suggested.

This discrepancy is possibly due to the hybrid’s delightful driveability, prompting me to engage with it beyond a mere means of transport. The electric boost makes the Crosstrek Hybrid more responsive off the line and provides a lively edge in city driving. It also mitigates the often-dull drive associated with CVTs.

Despite its higher stance, the vehicle feels stable and predictable in cornering. While certainly not a performance rally car in the classic sense, it is easy to forget this compact SUV’s capabilities.

Cozy, but the Touchscreen Needs Work

Upon entering the rear seats, the Crosstrek’s dimensions become apparent. With 36.7 inches of rear legroom, it surpasses the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 32 inches; however, families may find larger SUVs like the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid more appealing, the latter being nearly a foot longer.

The trade-off for the extra size in those models is evident in their second row and cargo area: The Crosstrek’s trunk space measures just 18.6 cu-ft (expandable to 50.6 cu-ft with folded seats), significantly less than the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 21.5 cu-ft and woefully shy compared to the RAV4 and CR-V’s 37.5 cu-ft and 39.3 cu-ft, respectively.

One area that remains a significant drawback for Subaru is the infotainment system. The spacious 11.6-inch touchscreen—paired with a 12.3-inch digital cluster—is commendable, and I appreciate that physical controls for essential functions like temperature and volume accompany it. Unfortunately, the software itself lacks intuitiveness, often feeling cumbersome and slow.

At least users benefit from wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and critical functions such as heated seats, drive mode selection, and accessing the rearview camera use dedicated physical buttons. The heated steering wheel and shifter are leather-wrapped, complemented by dual-zone climate control, but overall, the Crosstrek Limited Hybrid maintains a rugged feel with faux-leather StarTex seating (instead of cloth on the Sport Hybrid) and durable floor mats.

Final Thoughts on the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

It’s worth noting that Subaru is among the few manufacturers that would appreciate the comparison of their vehicle to a wagon; however, I emphasize that any such comparisons are indeed flattering. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is well-suited for many drivers, offering reliable all-wheel drive for those in colder climates, and the hybrid components make it unexpectedly enjoyable to drive.

The contrast with the Corolla Cross Hybrid is pronounced, especially since Subaru utilizes a Toyota-based hybrid framework. The Corolla’s spartan base model (starting at $30,745 with AWD and delivery charge included) may come off as more economical, but I prefer the driving experience of the Subaru. Although both vehicles share similar lengths, the Crosstrek’s focus is on rear passenger comfort, while the Corolla prioritizes cargo capacity.

For those who prioritize fuel efficiency, the Toyota holds the upper hand, achieving approximately 10 mpg more than the Subaru. Ultimately, the options in this category are limited, and most consumers likely have a preference for the established all-weather capability of a Crosstrek or the practical qualities of the Corolla Cross. However, while the hybrid’s main advantage in the latter is fuel economy, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid distinctly enhances its overall competence compared to its non-hybrid counterpart.
