Each year, automotive technology advances as manufacturers unveil new innovations while refining existing ones. Conceptually, this progress is beneficial; however, increased technological complexity often leads to a rise in issues. The 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study conducted by J.D. Power reveals that software and tech complications have emerged as the primary source of problems reported by car owners, with infotainment systems facing the most scrutiny.

According to the survey findings, issues related to infotainment systems were the most prevalent, with an alarming rate of 56.7 issues reported per 100 vehicles. In contrast, exterior problems accounted for 27.5 issues per 100 vehicles. The frequency of infotainment issues has prompted J.D. Power to revise its survey strategy for 2027, which will entail collecting data year-round, thus enabling manufacturers to identify and rectify issues with in-car systems more swiftly.

Despite numerous recent infotainment systems falling short of expectations, J.D. Power’s findings indicate that not every new vehicle is prone to these challenges. Lexus emerged as the most dependable brand, closely followed by Buick and Mini. Even though Lexus’ prior infotainment touchpad was criticized, the brand wisely discontinued it in favor of an intuitive touchscreen format.

Enhancing Over-the-air Updates and Smartphone Connectivity

Malfunctioning infotainment systems can create significant challenges for users, but an increasing number of manufacturers are implementing over-the-air (OTA) updates to address these issues following vehicle delivery. Theoretically, these OTA improvements should swiftly resolve software bugs, yet J.D. Power reveals that few consumers are experiencing tangible benefits. While 40% of participants acknowledged having received an OTA software update over the past year, under 30% reported a noticeable enhancement in their vehicle’s performance.

Smartphone integration also garnered criticism, particularly relating to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. Numerous drivers voiced their frustration concerning unreliable wireless charging pads and Bluetooth connectivity as well.

Many users express a preference for leveraging Google or Apple’s platforms rather than the native interface provided by their vehicles. Even entry-level cars frequently offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard options. However, if the connectivity lacks reliability, then such features lose their appeal, indicating that various automakers still have considerable room for growth in this area.
